Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Bookmark ("we," "us," or "our") is a twice-weekly newsletter for small business owners, published at followbookmark.com. This privacy policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what choices you have.

What we collect

Email address. When you subscribe to Bookmark, we collect your email address. This is the only information we require.

Name. If you choose to provide your first name, we use it to personalize emails. This is optional.

Usage data. Our email platform (Kit) automatically collects standard email engagement data, including whether you opened an email, clicked a link, and your approximate location based on IP address. Our website analytics tool (Fathom) tracks aggregate visitor behavior, like page views and referral sources, without cookies and without collecting information that identifies you personally. Your IP address is only briefly processed by Fathom and there's no way for us to identify you from it. Our website host (Ghost) collects standard server logs for security and site operation.

How we use it

We use your information to:

  • Send you the Bookmark newsletter editions you signed up for (U.S. edition on Tuesdays, Michigan edition on Thursdays, or both)
  • Understand which content is useful so we can improve the newsletter
  • Occasionally send announcements about Bookmark, like new features, changes, or other updates directly relevant to your subscription

Legal basis for processing. Our legal basis for processing your email address is your consent, given when you subscribe. You can withdraw that consent at any time by unsubscribing.

We do not sell your information. We do not share your information with third parties except the service providers we use to operate Bookmark (listed below).

Service providers

We use the following third-party services to operate Bookmark:

  • Kit (kit.com), email delivery and subscriber management
  • Ghost (ghost.org), website hosting and content management
  • Fathom Analytics (usefathom.com), privacy-focused website analytics that doesn't use cookies

Each of these providers has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data on our behalf.

Sponsors

Bookmark includes paid sponsor placements in some editions. We may share aggregate, non-identifying performance data with sponsors, such as total subscriber count, open rate, click count, and click rate for their sponsored section. We do not share your email address or any other information that could identify you with sponsors, and we do not allow sponsors to place their own tracking pixels, scripts, or similar technology in our emails.

International data transfers

If you're located in the European Union, the UK, or elsewhere outside the United States, please be aware that Kit and Ghost may process data in the United States. We work with providers that maintain appropriate safeguards for handling data from the EU and UK, such as Standard Contractual Clauses. Fathom Analytics processes visitor data in a privacy-preserving way regardless of location.

Email preferences

You control your subscription. Every Bookmark email includes an unsubscribe link at the bottom. You can also manage which editions you receive, U.S., Michigan, or both, at any time using the preferences link in any email we send.

Unsubscribing from one edition does not remove you from the other. Clicking the full unsubscribe link removes you from all Bookmark emails.

Cookies

Our website uses cookies for basic functionality, like Ghost session management. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies. Our analytics tool, Fathom, doesn't use cookies at all to track visitors, so there's nothing to opt out of there.

Data retention

We retain subscriber data for as long as your subscription is active. If you unsubscribe, your email address is removed from our active send list. You can request complete deletion of your data by emailing us at hello@followbookmark.com.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding the personal information we hold about you:

  • Access, to know what data we have about you
  • Rectification, to correct inaccurate data
  • Erasure, to have your data deleted
  • Restriction, to limit how we use your data
  • Portability, to receive your data in a usable format
  • Objection, to object to how we process your data
  • Withdraw consent, at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal

To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@followbookmark.com and we'll respond within 30 days.

If you're in the European Union or UK and you're not satisfied with how we've handled your request, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Children

Bookmark is intended for adults running or working in small businesses. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll note the updated date at the top of this page. Continued use of Bookmark after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
